About UnseenTexts
UnseenTexts is a free, AI-assisted text understanding platform built for students who need to make sense of what they are reading — quickly, and without a learning curve of its own.
What UnseenTexts is
UnseenTexts is a set of focused study tools built around one idea: paste in a piece of text, and get back something that makes it easier to understand — an explanation, a summary, a set of notes, practice questions, or flashcards. There is no dashboard to configure and no workflow to learn. You paste text, pick a tool, and read the result.
Alongside the tools, we publish original study guides on reading comprehension, note-making, summarizing, exam technique, and reading research papers. The guides exist because the tools are only half the answer: knowing how to read an unseen passage or structure an exam answer is a skill worth having whether or not you ever use software to help.
Why it was created
The name comes from "unseen passage" or "unseen text" — the reading exercise where a student is handed a passage they have never encountered before and asked to understand it on the spot. That moment, staring at dense or unfamiliar text under time pressure, is the exact problem UnseenTexts is built around, whether it is happening in an exam hall or at a desk at 11pm before a deadline.
Most existing tools in this space are either buried inside a large subscription product, or so general-purpose that a student has to know what to ask for before they get anything useful. We wanted something narrower: a small number of clearly-labelled tools that each do one recognisable study task.
Who it is for
- School students working through assigned reading, comprehension exercises, and revision.
- College and university students dealing with dense academic writing and heavy reading loads.
- Researchers and postgraduates screening papers outside their immediate field.
- English language learners who need a plainer version of a text without losing its meaning.
- Anyone who has hit a paragraph that simply is not landing.
How we use AI
The tools are powered by a third-party large language model. When you submit text, it is sent from our server to that AI provider, which generates the explanation, summary, or other output you requested. The result is returned to you and displayed on the page.
Two things worth being direct about:
- AI output can be wrong. Explanations and summaries are generated automatically and may contain errors or omissions. Treat them as a starting point for your own understanding, not as a verified source. Always check anything that matters against your textbook, your notes, or your teacher.
- We prompt the models to stay grounded in your text. Each tool instructs the model to work only from the passage you provide rather than introducing outside information. This reduces, but does not eliminate, the risk of inaccuracy.
What happens to the text you submit
Text you paste into a tool is sent to our server and forwarded to the AI provider solely to generate your result. We record basic, anonymous usage statistics — which tool was used, how long the input was, and whether the request succeeded — so we can apply daily usage limits and understand which tools people find useful.
We do not require an account, we do not ask for your name or email to use the tools, and we do not use submitted text to train any model of our own. Our Privacy Policy sets this out in full. As a general precaution that applies to any online text tool, we would not recommend pasting sensitive personal information into UnseenTexts or any similar service.
Our editorial approach
The guides on this site are written specifically for UnseenTexts rather than assembled from generic material. Where we describe a study technique, we try to be honest about how well it is actually supported and where it does not apply, rather than presenting every method as equally effective. Where we are uncertain, we say so.
We would rather publish a small number of guides that are genuinely worth reading than a large volume of thin articles written to rank in search results.
Our mission
To make understanding text faster and less frustrating — without turning studying into something that depends on a tool. UnseenTexts is meant to sit alongside how you already study, not to replace the work of actually learning. A student who uses the Explain It tool and then re-reads the original passage with fresh understanding has used it exactly as intended.
How UnseenTexts is funded
UnseenTexts is free to use. We plan to support the running costs through advertising in future. Any advertising will be clearly distinguishable from the tools and the editorial content, and will not interfere with using the site.
Contact
UnseenTexts is an independently operated website. Questions, corrections, and feedback are genuinely welcome — if something in a guide is wrong or a tool is misbehaving, we would like to know. You can reach us through the contact page.
